Has the absolutely ARCTIC weather recently made anyone else want to book a trip to somewhere tropical??

(Raises both hands…and in fact, I just booked a trip to Puerto Rico next month to get some sun, but I digress…)

So as a means of combatting our collective impending Seasonal Affective Disorder, I wanted to share a list of some of the best luxury Caribbean resorts to consider (I’m sneaking a couple luxury Costa Rican ones in as well).

How to choose the best Caribbean luxury resort

There are a lot of factors to consider when figuring out what’s the best luxury resort for you.  What are you looking for?  Who are you traveling with?  What’s your budget??

If you’re going to splurge on a luxury hotel experience, you want it to live up to expectations.  So figure out what is most important for you…is it an amazing pool?  A pristine beach?  Feeling like royalty because of the overall experience and service?  How important is the size of the room?  Etc etc.

It’s good for you to know a bit about ME and the types of things I look for when booking a luxury resort in the Caribbean or other tropical destinations, because it will factor into my list below.  I’m usually traveling solo or occasionally with a friend, and want to lay out at the pool all day but ideally have a gorgeous beach to look at and enjoy at sunrise/sunset.

I want a chill experience where I can read or listen to my Kindle at the pool without feeling like I’m in an episode of Jersey Shore (I’m basically 80 years old inside).  I don’t want to have to stress about being able to find a good pool chair, and I definitely want the food and cocktails to be awesome.

So those are my priorities when I’m choosing the best all-inclusive or regular Caribbean luxury hotel.  I’ll also note that I haven’t talked about either Aruba or Puerto Rico in this post (two other Caribbean faves) because I haven’t stayed at luxury resorts there, opting more for rentals or very simple hotels.

Before we dive in, I made a fun Reel/YouTube Short with a few of these resorts for inspiration (something I’m trying to do better with this year, per my 2024 “intentions”)!

I will talk about each resort or hotel in more detail below, and then link to a SUPER detailed review post on each.  At a very reductive level, here are some of the ways you could think about the luxury resorts in this post:

  • Best overall:  LeBlanc Cancun (pool, beach, all-inclusive experience, food, & more)
  • For some of the best views, water, chill vibe, & experience:  Tensing Pen
  • For a more traditional (& more social) all-inclusive resort:  Excellence Playa Mujeres
  • For a unique luxury rainforest “glamping” experience:  Nayara Tented Camp
  • For a mixed-age large family group that’s all-inclusive:  Iberostar Grand Rose Hall (& its siblings)
  • For an intimate rainforest stay with amazing service:  Amor Arenal

My picks for the best Caribbean & Costa Rican luxury resorts

These aren’t necessarily in any particular order, other than that I’m starting with my favorite.  These are mostly adults-only (or at least don’t allow kids under 13).  They’re about half all-inclusive and half a la carte (usually breakfast is included).

LeBlanc Cancun (adults-only all-inclusive; Mexico)

The first time I visited LeBlanc Cancun, I very much had a “is this real life??” feeling.  I have no qualms calling this a luxury resort.  Located in the heart of the hotel zone in Cancun (an area I’d normally avoid like the plague), this smaller boutique resort is absolutely gorgeous.

The pool areas and the beach are the first MAJOR draw here…I seriously spent from like 8am to 5pm every single day by the pool.  If you are booking a trip with “mixed priorities” (e.g. one person has to have an amazing pool, and the other person HAS to have an amazing beach), this is one of the few places I’ve found that truly delivers on both.

But just because the pool and beach are amazing, doesn’t mean the resort skimps on the rest of the experience.  One of the other things I loved the most was the food.  I tend to find the food at all-inclusives (even very high-end ones) to be kind of mediocre.  But I found the food at LeBlanc really excellent for an all-incusive, and I never felt bored or limited.

The service is also five-star…all of the staff are going out of their way to make it feel special, see if you need anything, and call you by name.  Though it’s a smaller resort, there are a handful of activities, including evening shows, live music, a churro cart, paddleboard yoga in the morning, etc, but this isn’t the type of resort that will try to entertain you 24/7, and it doens’t have a super social party vibe.

I love the very bright, clean modern aesthetic of the decor at LeBlanc, both in the main resort areas and in the rooms.  I’ve stayed in two different rooms, one of which was a major splurge and the other was more mid-range.  Both were amazing (I mean, look at that bathtub!), but since I spend so much time at the pool I found I didn’t need the highest-end room.

I recommend checking out the reviews on Booking.com and TripAdvisor (I always book through Booking when I can, but sometimes directly with the hotel) and read through my detailed review of LeBlanc (as well as a separate one *just* on the food & drinks!).

Nayara Tented Camp (Arenal, Costa Rica)

If you love luxury hotels with gorgeous views, mysterious volcanos, lush rainforest, sloth sightings, and wonderful service, then Nayara’s Costa Rica resort complex might be the place for you.  (If you’re looking for beaches, it is emphatically not.)  Nestled on a hillside in the Costa Rican rainforest with amazing views of the Arenal Volcano, the location is a huge part of the draw.

Nayara is actually three separate mini-resorts that all (mostly) share the same grounds, restaurants, and amenities.  I say “mostly” because there are a few things that only the Tented Camp guests have access to, and then there are a couple adults-only pools and one or two adults-only restaurants.  Tented Camp is actually not adults-only (nor is Nayara Gardens), but Nayara Springs IS.  But I didn’t run into issues with loud kids and mostly hung out in adults-only places.

I had stunning volcano views both from the pool and reception area, and from my “tent” balcony.  The entire resort is beautiful, making you feel like you’re in the middle of the jungle but adding little high-end touches here and there.  There are several pools (each with their own bar), some hot springs, a handful of restaurants, and various activities.  The staff were amazing as well.

Nayara Tented Camp has kind of a “luxury rainforest safari” feel, and doesn’t come cheap.  If you want most of the experience at a little bit lower price, consider staying in Nayara Springs or Gardens…you’ll have access to all the grounds, restaurants, pools, etc., just not this amazing room and view (I did one night at Tented Camp and one at Springs).

You know how I found out about Nayara in the first place??  Yep, Instagram.  And it lived up to the hype.  I was obsessed with my fancy “tent” (which is very much a solid, sealed, air-conditioned suite).  It was huge, comfortable, and gorgeous—I didn’t want to leave.

But that balcony with plunge pool and volcano view was really the star.  I loved having coffee and breakfast while staring at the volcano, even though the weather was a bit gloomy.  Overall the food and drinks were really good, and I’ll especially shout out the interesting cocktails.

If you’re looking for a luxury resort with amazing pools and don’t care about the beach, Nayara is an awesome pick.  I’d check out the recent reviews on both Booking.com and TripAdvisor, as well as my detailed review of my Nayara Tented Camp experience!  Plus, it’s just across the road from one of the other resorts on this list…

Tensing Pen (Negril, Jamaica)

I stumbled upon Tensing Pen while trying to figure out a mid-winter beach trip, and it kept popping up on different “best of” lists as a hidden gem (including Travel+Leisure’s 2019 “Best Of” where it was the #5 hotel in the Caribbean and Mexico and one of the Top 100 in the World).

What shocked me was the affordable price tag vs. others in the same lists.  So I decided to give it a try, and absolutely fell in love!  (It also ended up being my last trip before COVID locked everything down.)

Perched on the western rocky cliffs of Negril, Tensing Pen is an intimate super chill boutique resort with touches of luxury (while maintaining a “we’re in nature” feel).  It’s got sweeping ocean views, stunning sunsets, clear turquoise waters, a lovely pool, and a feeling of family—the staff truly gets to know guests, and greets them like old friends even years later (there isn’t a ton of turnover).

If you’re wanting white sand beaches and gently-lapping waves, head a few miles down to Seven Mile Beach.  But for my money, I’ll take the less crowded and slightly wilder vibe on the cliffs.  Kids are technically allowed but the sheer rocky cliffs and multitude of injury opportunities tends to keep them to a minimum and avoid very young kids.  I saw a few pre-teen/teens.

The resort has several different types of rooms and little bungalows, all fairly unique in location and setup.  I’ve stayed in two different ones, but am dying to stay in Cove Cottage (the third pic below).  The rooms are super clean and minimal-yet-comfortable, and the grounds are lush and gorgeous.  This is very much a “disconnect from the world” place, so no TVs in the rooms.

The restaurant and bar on-site are great (note, breakfast is included but Tensing Pen is not an all-inclusive) and there are several delicious food options nearby as well.  And best of all, it was chill and quiet, not at all crowded…and no party vibe.  You can check out more recent reviews on Booking.com and TripAdvisor, and read my super detailed review as well!

One great thing about Tensing Pen is that you not only have a great restaurant on-site, but a few awesome options very nearby as well.  While I haven’t had the chance to stay at Catcha Falling Star or Rockhouse Hotel & Spa (they also tend to make the same “best of” lists), I always make sure to have dinner at each at least once when I visit…and they’re only a few minutes away from Tensing Pen.

Another one of the best hotels in Jamaica to consider is Catcha Falling Star

Excellence Playa Mujeres (adults-only all-inclusive; Mexico)

This and the Iberostar at the end are the most traditional all-inclusive resorts on this list, but still are typically considered “luxury”; of the two, this is my pick.  For groups of adult friends, family groups (with adult children), or just people looking for a slightly more social and higher-energy experience (without being an awful party scene), Exellence Playa Mujeres is an awesome option.

The resort is a bit more large and sprawling, but still easily walkable.  The grounds are beautiful and very well cared-for, with seven different pools (including three dedicated to Excellence Club guests, more on that in a minute).  Personally I found the beach fine but not as amazing, so if that’s your primary focus then I’d consider LeBlanc or further south on the Riviera Maya.

This was definitely a more social crowd, with lots of activities depending on what you want and guests chatting and getting to know each other.  A lot of guests come back over and over, it has a major cult following and the service was great, they make a big deal of “come back soon” on your last day.

I had booked an Excellence Club room (which is not a club you join, but rather a level of room/experience), and I definitely feel that’s the way to go.  The rooms themselves are the same, but you get access to the Excellence Club lounge (with better liquor), the Magna restaurant and bar area, and the Excellence Club-only pools and beach areas, along with private check-in and check-out.

My room was lovely, pretty large, and comfortable, as well as impeccably clean, with a good seating area in the room as well as on the balcony too.  I loved watching sunrise and sunset from my balcony while (sadly) getting some work done.  I found the food good but a little uneven when compared to LeBlanc Cancun…I had some great individual dishes but quite a few average ones too.  It always *looks* beautiful, but they didn’t always taste as good.  Drinks were mostly really good.

If you’re looking for a luxury resort in the Caribbean that can meet a lot of different needs and tastes and has a more fun vibe without being a spring break party, you definitely need to look at Excellence Playa Mujeres!  Check out recent reviews on TripAdvisor, and you can read my deep-dive review of EPM as well as my detailed comparison of EPM vs. LeBlanc Cancun!

Amor Arenal (“adult-friendly”; Arenal, Costa Rica)

You ever see a picture on Instagram and are like…”YEP, THAT’S HAPPENING”??  I took a screenshot of Amor Arenal and kind of forgot about it, and then when I was wanting to go somewhere warm last year I went back through my screenshots, found it, and immediately booked it.

If you love intimate boutique luxury hotels with stunning volcano views, attentive service, and lush rainforest privacy, this one’s for you.  If having the best pool, beach, and sun are your priority, then I’d look elsewhere (and in fact, not in this area of Costa Rica).  I wanted sun but also just wanted PEACE after a few rough months.

Amor Arenal is a very small resort (maybe 20 rooms?) that’s embedded in the rainforest, with straight-on volcano views from most of the rooms.  It’s accessible luxury—a bit of a splurge but not insane, and focuses more on a great service experience vs. being really bougie.  Breakfast is included in the room price but the rest of your meals and drinks are a la carte.

They’ve focused on the resort fully blending into the jungle and having as minimal of a footprint as possible.  It’s quiet and intimate, not a rowdy party resort, and the staff are absolutely amazing…friendly, warm, welcoming, and helpful.  They call it “adult-friendly”, with no kids under 13 allowed.

Even though they were fully booked, I often felt like the only person there, which was amazing.  While the resort is small, they’ve got some nice wellness options, including a couple small pools, an open-air yoga studio, meditation platform, open-air spa, and a few hikes available.

My room was comfortable, clean, roomy, and beautiful, with that balcony and volcano view as the star.  There is a small plunge pool on the balcony but I had trouble getting good pics of it.

The one place I wasn’t quite as “wowed” was the food.  The cocktails were pretty great, but the food didn’t (in my opinion) quite live up to the standards of the rest of the resort.  If you’re staying more than a night or two, you’ll probably want to take a taxi down to the town for some variety…something I meant to do but got lazy about.

You should look at recent reviews on both Booking.com and TripAdvisor, and read through my more detailed review of Amor Arenal here!

Iberostar Grand Rose Hall (adults-only all-inclusive; Montego Bay, Jamaica)

Grand Rose Hall is a very pretty, large resort located on a beautiful stretch of beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  It’s unique on this list in that it’s a smaller adults-only resort that’s connected to two family-oriented resorts, so makes a great option for family groups who are trying to please everyone.

In full disclosure, I didn’t *choose* to stay here, I was here for a holy day festival with a few hundred brethren and so it was chosen for me.  I stayed in the adults-only Grand Rose Hall while all my friends (who have kids) stayed in Suites, the nicer family resort.  I was also there for 9 nights, which is way too long for an all-inclusive in my opinion, particularly since my personal travel style doesn’t run toward all-inclusives or larger resorts.

So with that caveat out of the way, I’ll say that the resort grounds and indoor areas are really nice, with the whole thing oriented around the pool areas as the centerpiece.  I REALLY appreciated that there were plenty of chairs and beds near the pool (a pet peeve of mine is stressing out about finding a chair in the sun).

The afternoon pool energy is a bit more party-like than my old soul prefers, but still not like a spring breakers vibe.  I’m just old and cranky.  The beach is also really beautiful, so it’s a good resort option for those “mixed priority” groups I mentioned earlier (some want great pool, some want great beach).

My room was large, clean, and comfortable for the most part, with a nice patio and view over the ocean—I spent a lot of time out here!  I loved watching the sunrises and sunsets from my balcony, but also from down on the beach as well.

The one place I felt the resort fell short was the food.  It was just okay…some bright spots but some actively not-good.  They were clearly trying and maybe I just chose wrong for nine days straight, but it was in-line with what I typically think of for all-inclusives (and granted, I have very high standards when it comes to food and drink).  I’ll note the majority of reviewers disagree with me on that.

I recommend looking at recent reviews on  Booking.com and TripAdvisor, and here’s my detailed review of the resort!
