Where to stay in Devon: Torquay
The little seaside city (large town??) of Torquay was a great place to base ourselves. First was location—it was really central, with easy access to highways. If you look at it on a map, you can see how easily you’d be able to visit all through Devon, up to Exeter, over along the Jurassic Coast, over to Cornwall, and even up toward Bath.
It’s also big enough to have what you need, including lots of rentals, a couple supermarkets, decent restaurants, and some cool things to do in the near vicinity (like adorable Cockington Village and the best scones ever in Babbacombe).

Okay, so where should you stay *in* Torquay??
As I mentioned at the outset, our lovely Airbnb was perfect for us and I’d highly recommend it. First off, we have to talk about this VIEW. The view was 100% what sold us…made even better with a few spectacular sunsets.

But even on a mediocre sunset night the view was awesome. I enjoyed sitting out on the patio with a glass of wine, a blanket and my Kindle, watching the waves. You can choose to look back at the town, or out toward the sea.

We’d come out here and eat breakfast in the morning as well. In case it’s not clear the patio and the view were really what I loved and why I think this is the perfect place to stay in Devon.

Oh yeah, the inside too…I forgot to take many pics, which is totally my bad. In this first photo you can see the dining area, which was surrounded by the windows and view.
The second is of the living room. It’s a bit small but not cramped at all, and it’s an open space concept with the kitchen. The bedroom was fairly small but clean and comfy, and the bathroom was adequate (for two women in their 30s who also had to get dressed up every day).
So if you’re headed to southern England and want to figure out the best place to base yourself in the genera Devon area, definitely give Torquay a try—and look up this adorable rental that’s perfect for a couple or a couple friends!
