Why Carvoeiro Boardwalk Has to Be On Your Algarve Itinerary | There are so many things to do on Portugal's southern coast, but one of the must-see places in the Algarve is a fast & easy stop at the Carvoeiro Boardwalk! It's the definition of "bang for your buck", with stunning clifftop views, rocky exploration, crashing waves, & all with an easy walk. What to do in the Algarve, Lagos, best southern Portugal itinerary ideas!

There are no shortage of stunning coastal views throughout Portugal’s southern coast.  But probably the biggest surprise on our Algarve roadtrip was our brief stop to walk some of the Carvoeiro Boardwalk!

So I want to show you why this picturesque clifftop walk is one of my must-see places in the Algarve, even if you have very limited time…and give you the details for visiting yourself.

What you need to know to visit the Carvoeiro Boardwalk

  • The boardwalk is located about halfway between Lagos and Albufueira in the town of Carvoeiro.  There’s a beach by the same name nearby as well, but we didn’t have time to stop there.
  • It’s small, probably no more than a 20-minute walk, but you get a TON of “bang for your buck”.  The views are spectacular and you can go down and explore in a few spots vs. only being confined to the boardwalk…this is especially great for kids as well.
  • I think it would be difficult (though not impossible) to visit without a car.  I would book through Zest Cars in the Algarve…Masterkings was the rental company and I had a great experience.  I typically use DiscoverCars and I’d definitely look there, but there are apparently so many rental company scams in this area that I would only consider a couple of the actual companies.
  • If you aren’t renting a car, and especially if you’re on a really tight timeframe, it’s worth considering a multi-stop guided tour, which includes not only the Carvoeiro Boardwalk but also a boat tour.
  • Driving in the Algarve is super easy, great roads and Google Maps works fine.  I just entered “Carvoeiro Boardwalk” in Google Maps and it brought me right here, and I found street parking easily (though we were visiting in winter, so during peak season parking may be more challenging).

Once we parked, we found one of the entrances to the boardwalk right near our car.  We looked to the right (while facing the water, third pic below) and I couldn’t tell if that was the fortress, or just a cool bar patio.

But instead we took a left and started walking along the coast.

First off, we could not have asked for a more gorgeous day, so the shifting blues and greens of the water contrasting with the blue sky and pale rocks was amazing.

We intended to keep going, but then saw this cool area where you could go down the steps and explore…and we couldn’t resist!

So down we went.  The steps are pretty easy to navigate if you’re decently mobile…steep, but well-maintained.

Apparently this is called Miradouro da Falésia do Carvoeiro, and it is AMAZING.  There are towering cliffs, little holes and caves cut out to explore (kids especially love this), tide pools, crashing waves, and more.

If you’re traveling with kids, you have to know them well enough to decide if this is a good idea.  My 10-year-old nephew was with us and he had a blast scrambling around and exploring, poking his head into caves and posing on rocks.

But there are no guardrails, the rocks are uneven and could be slick, and kids could get hurt very easily if not watched properly (or not responsible enough to take appropriate care).

Lol, you can see Reid’s head poking up like a creeper in that pic of me below.

We spent so much time exploring here that we didn’t get to go further along the boardwalk to the Algar Seco rocks, which also look amazing…I definitely recommend it!  It’s not too much further, but we were running out of time and had to get to the airport to catch a bus to Seville.
