Where To Stay In Franschhoek, South Africa + A Review Of Cape Vue Country House

It’s no secret that I love a wine region, and I love a little boutique B&B.  And when I was planning my trip to Franshhoek and Stellenbosch during my South Africa itinerary, I wanted to stay somewhere beautiful and peaceful after the bustle of Cape Town, and before the wildness of safaris…and be nestled right in the heart of the vineyards.

I did a ton of research and narrowed it down to a shortlist, so here are my recommendations for where to stay in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, as well as my detailed review of where I *did* stay—the lovely Cape Vue Country House!

My TL;dr review of Cape Vue Country House

I’ve got a much more detailed review of the hotel below, including lots of photos, but if you’re in a hurry here’s my “short and sweet” version.

I also always recommend you check out the detailed reviews on both Booking.com and TripAdvisor, I booked through Booking.com which is my go-to.

  • The location is awesome, right around the corner from the “main drag” of Franschhoek (either an easy walk or a 1-2 minute drive).
  • It was like staying at a peaceful country estate, with beautiful and comfortable house and grounds.  The backyard has several seating areas, a small pool, and great mountain views.
  • My room was spacious and very comfortable, with nice little touches like a coffee setup and bottle of wine, and there was a fairly hearty breakfast as well.
  • It hit a budget sweet spot, tilting toward the luxury side but mid-range on cost, so I felt like I got good “bang for my buck”.

I’d definitely stay at the Cape Vue again.  However, here’s my shortlist of the other options I strongly considered.  I’ve talked about deciding between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch in my deeper post about exploring South Africa’s winelands.

For where to stay in Franshhoek, I looked at Last Word (an adorable little hotel that gets rave reviews) or Basse Provence Country House (looks amazing, but I decided not to splurge since I was going super bougie on safaris).  Same for Leeu House, which looks AMAZING.

For where to stay in Stellenbosch I looked at Molen Vliet Vineyards (I really loved the idea of staying at a winery), Lanzerac Hotel & Spa (WOW!), or Eendracht Hotel (a lovely but more budget option).

So let’s dive in to the details and lots more pics!  I arrived in late afternoon after driving around the Cape Peninsula, and easily found the hotel.  It’s just around the corner from the main drag of Franschhoek.

As I drove in the gate, I had the perfect introduction to the estate, with grapevines surrounding me and the mountains rising up in front.  I was met by someone (maybe an after-hours manager?) and given a perfunctory welcome tour, then I got settled in my room.

The rooms

I had booked a Suite with Mountain View, though I’ll be honest and say I didn’t notice a mountain view (I didn’t realize there was any view and am not positive there was).  The room was spacious and super comfortable, with a comfy bed, a squashy chair to sit in, and space to lay out my suitcase.

They provided all sorts of nice little touches, such as an espresso machine and little cookies, a bottle of wine, and a pool coverup as well as a bathrobe.  The bathroom and toiletries were nice as well, and everything was very quiet.  My only complaint was that I wished the air conditioning cranked just a bit more (I sleep hot).

The common areas & grounds

This was the biggest draw for me, and what I’ll spend the most time talking about.  You definitely feel like you’re at a country estate here.  Weirdly, it was a ghost town and very quiet, I barely ever heard or saw a soul even though it was Easter weekend so I assumed it would be super busy.  (Note, this is not a complaint for me.)

I didn’t spend a ton of time in the common areas inside.  This is the main one, which includes both a nice little reading nook and also the breakfast room.

But the star of the show is outside.  The grounds are absolutely lovely, with a huge back lawn, obviously all the vineyards surrounding the property, and those mountains as the background.

There are a few different seating areas scattered around the backyard.

There is, of course, the pool, which I didn’t have time to avail myself of but adds a photogenic element to the hotel’s vibe.

And there are a few lounge chairs and a small table near the pool where I would go out and read for a bit between my winery tours and my dinner reservation, to watch the sunset and relax.  I worked out here one early morning as well to watch the sunrise and enjoy the natural beauty.

The breakfast

Lastly, there was the included breakfast that makes Cape Vue House a “bed and breakfast”.  The owner, Basil, was there in the morning for breakfast, and is a charming, chatty guy.

The weather was nice enough that they moved the tables out onto the patio to enjoy the view.  I rarely get super excited about hotel breakfasts so I wasn’t like, blown away, but they have a good spread of high-quality toasts and jams, granolas and yogurt and fruit, and then you can order a hot item off the menu as well (I went with an omelette).

I loved my stay at Cape Vue Country House and was bummed I could only stay two nights here—it wasn’t enough time to really be able to sit and enjoy the hotel’s grounds in addition to touring the winelands area.  It should definitely be on your short list for where to stay in Franshhoek if you’re planning your own adventure!
